We try to respond within minutes.

How long do I need an ignition interlock device?

The California DMV program is a minimum of 5 months, but most people are on the device for about 5 to 7 months depending on their situation. Your attorney or the DMV can tell you the exact length for your case.

What do I need to get started?

Your driver's license number and vehicle info (make, model, year, VIN). We verify your eligibility with the DMV before scheduling. If anything is blocking it, like unpaid fines or incomplete DUI school, we'll tell you exactly what needs to happen first.

What if my interlock was ordered by the court?

The process is the same whether your requirement came from the DMV or a court order. Bring whatever paperwork you received (DMV notice or court order letter) and we'll handle the verification and scheduling from there.

How long does installation take?

Plan for 2 to 4 hours. You'll drop your car off at the service center in the morning and pick it up the same day. We'll train you on how to use the device before you leave.

What if I'm under a license suspension?

You can still get the car breathalyzer installed. Just bring a licensed driver with you to the appointment. After installation, we'll give you the DL-920 form to take to the DMV, which restores your driving privileges under a restricted license.

How often do I need to visit the service center?

Every 60 days for a calibration visit. It's quick, usually around 15 minutes. We'll remind you when it's coming up and help you schedule a time that works. Most providers require visits every 30 days, so you'll make half as many trips with us.

What if I don't own the vehicle I drive?

You can install the device in a vehicle you regularly drive, even if it belongs to someone else. The registered owner just needs to sign a Permission to Install form and provide a copy of their driver's license. We'll send you the form and walk you through it.

Does it work with electric vehicles?

Hybrid vehicles are fully compatible. Full electric vehicle support (Tesla, Rivian, etc.) is in development. Contact us to check compatibility for your specific vehicle.

Where are your service centers?

We currently have six service center locations across the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento region: Alameda, Concord, Daly City, Roseville, and two locations in Sacramento. Text us your zip code and we'll find the closest one.

What if I can't afford $99/month?

California offers income-based discounts for ignition interlock programs. Depending on your household income, you may qualify for a lower rate. Contact us and we'll check your eligibility and handle the application.

What is an ignition interlock device?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a car breathalyzer wired into your vehicle's ignition system. You blow into a handset before starting the car. If your breath alcohol concentration is below the preset limit, the vehicle starts normally. If it reads above the limit, the ignition is locked.

The device also requires rolling retests while driving, which are short breath samples taken at random intervals. Every test is logged and reported to the California DMV automatically. According to the CDC, interlocks reduce repeat DUI offenses by about 70% while installed.

Who needs an ignition interlock in California?

Under California Vehicle Code Section 23575, most DUI convictions require installation of an ignition interlock device. First-time DUI offenders are required to install an IID for a minimum of 5 months. Second offenses require 12 months, and third offenses require 24 months. DUI convictions involving injury carry a mandatory 12 to 48 month IID requirement.

California's IID program is administered by the DMV. You will receive a notification letter specifying your requirement length and a deadline for installation. You must use a DMV-certified provider. BACtrack Drive is certified by the California DMV and operates six service centers across the SF Bay Area and Sacramento.

How much does an ignition interlock cost?

The average cost of an ignition interlock device in California ranges from $70 to $150 per month for the device lease alone. Most providers add separate fees for installation ($75 to $150), calibration visits ($50 to $100 every 30 to 60 days), removal ($50 to $100), and service calls. For a typical 6-month program, these additional fees can add $500 or more to the total cost.

BACtrack Drive charges a flat $99 per month for monthly service, installation, calibration visits, and standard support. Device removal is handled separately and pricing varies. For a 6-month program, the total cost with BACtrack Drive is $594 before any device removal cost, compared to an industry average of $1,000 to $1,500 when all fees are included.

How to get an interlock device installed

Contact BACtrack Drive with your driver's license number and vehicle information. We verify your IID eligibility with the California DMV using the Mandatory Actions Unit (MAU) system, schedule your installation at the nearest service center, and prepare your DMV paperwork, including the DL-920 form required for license reinstatement.

Installation is performed by a trained technician and takes 2 to 4 hours. You'll receive hands-on device training before you leave. Most appointments are scheduled within 1 to 2 business days of your first contact. BACtrack Drive currently operates service centers in Alameda, Concord, Daly City, Roseville, and Sacramento.
