How It Works

What Happens at Your Installation

Where this fits in getting your license back

The interlock installation is one step in the DMV's restricted-license process, alongside your SR-22 filing and reinstatement fee. The DMV's paperwork lists your required steps.

What to bring to your installation

  • Your driver's license or other photo ID
  • Current vehicle registration
  • Proof of insurance
  • Your DMV notice or court order, if you have one
  • If you don't own the car: a Permission to Install form signed by the owner

Your car needs to start, run, and shift into drive and reverse, with the battery connected.

Confirm your requirement with the DMV.

Your DMV or court paperwork states your interlock term and deadline. Verify it before you book.

FAQ

Alameda Interlock Questions

If you don't see your question here, text us at (707) 216-1137.

How much does an ignition interlock cost in Alameda?

BACtrack Drive charges $99 per month. That covers monthly service, installation, calibration visits every 56 days, and standard support. Removal is paid to the shop directly. California's income-based program can lower the monthly cost for qualified drivers.

How long does installation take?

Plan for 2 to 4 hours at the shop. You pick up your vehicle the same day, with your DL-920 form in hand.

How often does the device get calibrated in Alameda?

Every 56 days at the Alameda center. Most providers calibrate every 30 days, so you make fewer trips to the shop.

Can I get calibrated at a different Drive shop?

Yes. You can get calibrated at any BACtrack Drive service center, not only the one that installed your device. See all locations.

Can I get an appointment on a Saturday?

Check the shop hours above, and call ahead to confirm availability for installations.

Can someone else drive my car?

Yes. Anyone can drive your car as long as they take and pass the breath test the same way you do. Never ask someone to blow into the device for you. California counts that as a violation.

Will the interlock drain my car battery?

The ALCOLOCK AL-2500 is built to avoid the overnight battery drain many interlocks are known for. Drive the car regularly, especially in cold weather or if your battery is older. If the battery dies, call us before a jump-start or a new battery. A battery that stays disconnected for more than 15 minutes means an early service visit.

Can my mechanic work on my car?

Yes. Call us before any repair, and bring the repair receipt to your next appointment. Repairs we don't know about can be treated as tampering.

Which device does BACtrack Drive install?

The ALCOLOCK AL-2500, a California DMV-certified device with a removable handset. It is ready in 30 seconds and works in English and Spanish.
